At the end of the 19th century, when the garden was planned at Frescati, Professor Bergianus, Veit Wittrock, had three areas laid out that would represent well-known mountain summits in Asia, North America and Europe. Grand visions and rock-blasting in the southern part of the garden made it possible to construct the three mountains.

The Large mountain (also called the Asian Mountain) displays Asian plants – on the upper part mostly honeysuckles, cotoneaster and species of lilac. The other two mountains display North American plants and the flora of the Scandinavian mountain chain along with plants from Iceland.
