Abstract:

The rbcL gene of 25 taxa was sequenced and analyzed cladistically in order to define more precisely the order Asterales s.1. and to reconstruct the phylogeny of Goodeniaceae. The cladistic analyses show that the Asterales comprise the families Abrophyllaceae, Alseuosmiaceae, Argophyllaceae, Asteraceae, Calyceraceae, Campanulaceae s.l., Donatiaceae, Goodeniaceae (including Brunoniaceae), Menyanthaceae, Pentaphragmataceae, and Stylidiaceae. Abrophyllaceae, Alseuosmiaceae, Brunoniaceae, and Donatiaceae have previously not been studied in this respect. Within the Goodeniaceae, four groups supported by the rbcL data can be distinguished: the genus Lechenaultia, the Anthotium-Dampiera-group, the genus Brunonia, and a group formed by the remaining genera, the Scaevola-Goodenia-group
