Fifth international Rubiaceae and Gentianales Conference

Stockholm, Sweden, September 6–10, 2010.

Travel and accommodation information

Travel to Stockholm

There are four airports in the Stockholm vicinity. The main airport is Stockholm-Arlanda International Airport (ARN) situated ca. 40 km N of Stockholm. Most major airlines fly to Arlanda, while a few European airlines fly to other airports (see below).

More information: Arlanda in Wikipedia

Arlanda airport is serviced by trains [Arlanda Express 20 minutes to Stockholm Central Station, SEK 240 one way] as well as Airport Buses [Airport Coaches ca. 40–50 minutes to Stockholm City Terminal, SEK 119 one way]. Taxis should have fixed prices between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm vicinity [ca. 30–40 minutes, SEK 495]. All price estimations are from March 2010 and may or may not be current in September.

Bromma airport is located within Stockholm and a few European airlines fly there (particularly from Brussels). You can get to and from Bromma airport using Local transport (SL), Airport Coaches [20 minutes to Stockholm City Terminal, SEK 79 one way] or taxi. The airport is small and ground transport services run less often than those at Arlanda.

Skavsta [Stockholm Skavsta] is situated ca. 100 km S of Stockholm near the town Nyköping. Certain European airlines, in particular some with "cheap flights" profile, fly there. It is serviced by Airport Coaches [ca. 1 hour 20 minutes, SEK 99 one way].

Weather in Stockholm

Mean temperature for Stockholm in early September is 11–19°C. The weather can be unpredictable, and show a wide range from sunny, fairly warm weather to cool and rainy.

Passport and Visa information

Sweden is connected to the Schengen agreement. As a general rule, citizens from other countries visiting Sweden for a period less than 90 days need a valid passport, but do not need a visa. However, there are exceptions. Check this list if you are not sure. Should you need a visa, please contact the Swedish embassy or Consulate in your country.

Money

Sweden still uses Kronor (SEK, "Swedish Crowns"). Currency exchange is available in many places, including the Central (railway) Station. Major credit cards [Visa and MasterCard in particular] are accepted almost everywhere. Cheques are not used in Sweden and Travel cheques may be difficult to use.

Local transport [SL]

Stockholm public transport services are reliable and fairly affordable. Within the city area anything else is unreasonable (except walking and biking). All buses, the Metro (T-banan) and commuter trains use the same ticket system.

A one week travelcard is 260 SEK. Using a travelcard, you can travel as much as you like, regardless of zone boundaries. Tickets other than travelcards are expensive and impractical.

Accommodation

You have to book your own accomodation. The non exhaustive list below comprises a number of selected hotels based on convenience, as they are relatively close to local area transportation to the conference area. We suggest that you to check the "Tourist information" link above for more possibilities. The "Destination Stockholm" web site may be particularly useful.

Should you prefer to stay at other hotels, it might be convenient to choose one close to the following metro (T-bana) stations: T-centralen, Östermalmstorg, Stadion, or Tekniska Högskolan, because they are the closest to the Conference venue. We may be able to offer advice, should you hesitate about the location of a hotel.

There are several other events in Stockholm during the week of the conference, and we recommend that you book your accommodation as well in advance as possible. Prices indicated for the different hotels/hostels are likely to vary on a daily basis based on room availability and demand.
If you are willing to share accommodation with a colleague, a double room is usually less expensive per person than a single room.
